Lieutenant Colonel W. Scott Weis
Lieutenant Colonel Weis was born in Newark, NJ, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1992 as a Marine Rifleman. From 1993 through 1996 he served as a small boat Coxswain, Fire Team Leader and Squad Leader with 2d Small Craft Company; India Company, 3d Battalion, 2d Marines; and Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines. In 1996 he was commissioned through the Enlisted Commissioning Program and transitioned to the Field Artillery upon graduation from the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course.
Prior to serving the Marines and Sailors of 5th Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Weis had the privilege to command Headquarters Platoon and Guns Platoon, Battery R; Headquarters and Service Company, OCS; Battery G, 2d Battalion, 11th Marines; and Marine Corps Recruiting Station Orlando.
Lieutenant Colonel Weis’ artillery assignments include Forward Observer, Fire Direction Officer and Executive Officer, 5th Battalion, 10th Marines (1998 to 2000); Battery Commander, Logistics Officer and Operations Officer, 2d Battalion, 11th Marines (2003 to 2006); Executive Officer, 11th Marine Regiment (2013 to 2015); and Assistant Fire Support Coordinator, 1st Marine Division (2015). Additional assignments include Officer Candidates School (2000 to 2003), the United States Naval Academy as a Company Officer (2006-2009), and 7th Marine Regiment (2012-2013).
Lieutenant Colonel Weis holds a Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, a Master’s degree from the University of Maryland, and is a graduate of the Field Artillery Captains Career Course, Amphibious Warfare School and Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program. His operational experience includes Operations RESTORE HOPE (Somalia), ASSURED RESPONSE (Liberia), QUICK RESPONSE (Central African Republic), participation in the Unit Deployment Program, and Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING REEDOM.
Lieutenant Colonel Weis assumed command of 5th Battalion on 4 June 2015.
