Sergeant Major, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment
SgtMaj J. P. Martinez

Sergeant Major Martinez is a native of Gallup, New Mexico. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1996.  Reported to Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California (Ca) in January 1997. He reported to the School of Infantry and completed Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, Ca that May. Private First Class Martinez continued to his MOS school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland and graduated as a 2131 / Towed Artillery Systems Technician. 

August 1997, PFC Martinez received orders to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines, Camp Pendleton, Ca. While assigned to 5/11 he attached to Battery “T” as a Towed Artillery Systems Technician. In January of 2000 Corporal Martinez deployed with Battery “S” on the USS Pearl Harbor in support of Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable. Upon returning from deployment Sergeant Martinez was re-assigned to Headquarters Battery, 5/11 as the Artillery Repair Chief. 

In March 2002 Sgt Martinez reported to Inspector & Instructor duty, Battery “N”, 5th Battalion, 14th Marines, Pico Rivera, Ca as a Towed Artillery Systems Technician.   

In March 2005, Sgt Martinez graduated from the Basic Recruiter School, Marine Corps Recruit Depoit, San Diego, Ca and reported to Recruiting Station San Francisco, Ca. Sgt Martinez recruited out of Recruiting Sub-Station San Jose, Ca.   

In April 2008, Staff Sergeant Martinez reported to Ordnance Maintenance Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Ca as an Artillery Repair Chief. A year later SSgt Martinez was assigned to Maintenance Detachment, Combat Logistics Battalion-15 as the Maintenance Chief. In April of 2010, SSgt Martinez deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and was the SNCOIC of the Combat Logistics Battalion detachment aboard the USS Dubuque that directly supported Battalion Landing Team 1/4 during the seven month deployment of split Amphibious Ready Group operations. 

In August 2011, SSgt Martinez returned to Ordnance Maintenance Company.  In October of 2011 Gunnery Sergeant Martinez was attached to Maintenance Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion (-) Reinforced and deployed to Afghanistan in February 2012 as the Company Gunnery Sergeant.  Later in the deployment he became the Company First Sergeant.  Upon return from Afghanistan in October, GySgt Martinez was attached to Headquarters &Support Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion as the E-TAMCN Manager.

In September 2013, GySgt Martinez received orders to Marine Detachment Fort Lee, Virginia.  While assigned to the detachment, he served as Course Chief for the Towed Artillery Repairer School.  In 2014 he became the Academics Coordinator for Ground Ordnance Schools which ensured the training of 10,800 entry level Marines.  In 2015, GySgt Martinez became the Detachment Operations Chief and managed 10 MOS producing schools' operational requirements. 

In March 2016, First Sergeant Martinez transferred to 3d Battalion, 11th Marines located at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twenty-nine Palms, Ca.  1stSgt Martinez served with Battery M, Battery K, and Headquarters Battery. He deployed twice; with Battery M in October 2016, and Battery K in October 2018 on the Unit Deployment Program, attaching to 3d Battalion, 12th Marines, Okinawa, Japan.  1stSgt Martinez served as the Battalion Sergeant Major of 3d Battalion, 11th Marines from Jan to Jun 2018 

In May 2019 and upon returning from Okinawa, 1stSgt Martinez transferred to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion as Company First Sergeant for Engineer Support Company.  1stSgt Martinez was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major in November 2019. 

In November 2020, Sergeant Major Martinez assumed his duties as the Sergeant Major of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466. He deployed with HMH-466 on UDP 22.1 and supported operation Resolute Dragon 2021, Japan.  He also, served as Air Combat Element (ACE) Sergeant Major during Exercise Balikatan, Phillippines.  

On 6 February 2023, Sergeant Major Martinez assumed his current duties as Sergeant Major of 5th Battalion, 11th Marines.  

SgtMaj Martinez' personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of 4th award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of 4th award), and the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara Medal.
