Lance Cpl. Richard Jackman, a motor transportation operator with the Georgian Liaison Team, 32nd Georgian Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, patrols with and mentors Georgian soldiers while on a seven-month deployment to Helmand province, Afghanistan. Jackman, 20, walks foot patrols and goes on mounted convoys alongside the Georgian soldiers. Jackman has more experience with the Georgians than some of the Marines on GLT since he trained with them in Germany before the deployment. "I got to know the Georgians (in Germany)," Jackman said. "They are good guys and they work hard." Besides mentoring the Georgians daily, Jackman is also the assistant camp commandant and is responsible for the cleanliness of the base and the general welfare of the warriors there. While growing up in Shapleigh, Maine, Jackman's mom often told him that he should join the military he said he chose the Marine Corps because of his uncle who was a Marine sniper. Jackman, who hopes to be a Marine Embassy Guard soon, said he loves walking patrols though it is hard work. "It's great when I get to have my boots on the ground since I'm usually stuck in a truck," Jackman said. "I'd much rather be out there then just in a truck." Jackman said patrols are the best part of the deployment. "When you start taking fire, your heart starts to beat out of your chest," Jackman said. "You immediately hit the ground, wait, and then do your best to shoot whenever you see the enemy."
