Chaplain Thornton is a priest of the Episcopal Church.  He earned Bachelor of Music and Master of Divinity degrees from Oral Roberts University, as well as the Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies at the U. S. Naval War College.

Since receiving his commission in 2004, Chaplain Thornton has served as the Chapel Pastor of the Tarawa Terrace Chapel at Camp Lejeune, the Battalion Chaplain for Marine Combat Training Battalion at the School of Infantry (East), Command Chaplain of the USS CHOSIN (CG 65), and Deputy Command Chaplain of Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka.  He is currently the Head Quarters Chaplain of 7^th Marine Regiment, 1^st Marine Division at 29 Palms.
