USS RUSHMORE, Pacific - Marines with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, and Japanese Soldiers with the Western Army Infantry Regiment, Japan Ground Self Defense Force, launch from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s Red Beach training area drive to and board the USS Rushmore (LSD-47) in Amphibious Assault Vehicles during exercise Iron Fist 2018, Jan. 31. When vehicles launch from a beach to board a ship, rather than embark at a pier, it is referred to as an in-stream on-load. Iron Fist is an annual, bilateral amphibious training exercise held in Southern California between the U.S. Marine Corps and the JGSDF. The Japanese Soldiers and U.S. Marines have trained together in Southern California via this annual, bilateral exercise for 13 consecutive years. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Kyle McNan)
