GULF OF ADEN (Dec. 12, 2016) U.S. Marines with the Maritime Raid Force (MRF), 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), hook and climb a ladder on to an unknown vessel to conduct a visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) mission during Exercise Alligator Dagger, Dec. 12. The MRF and special amphibious reconnaissance corpsmen provide the MEU with capabilities such as ship-borne and airborne raids, reconnaissance, and VBSS. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and 11th MEU are operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts to ensure the free flow of commerce, freedom of navigation and regional security.
