Sergeant Major, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines
SgtMaj M. C. Burgett

Sergeant Major Matthew Burgett is a native of Maui, Hawaii. He reported to MCRD San Diego for Recruit Training in September of 2004. Upon completion of Recruit Training, PFC Burgett reported to SOI-West for Marine Combat Training. 

After MCT, PFC Burgett attended Naval Aircrew Candidate School in Pensacola, FL where he was selected for the UH-1N training pipeline. PFC Burgett then attended Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School at NAS Brunswick, ME and H-1 Mechanic Training at Camp Pendleton, CA before reporting to HMT-303 at MCAS Camp Pendleton for UH-1N Marine Enlisted Aircrew Training. 

LCpl Burgett reported to HMLA-267 in January of 2006 for duty in the Flightline Division. He detached for the 15th MEU (SOC) in May of 2006 and participated in operations in support of OIF 5-7 from November 2006 to April 2007. Upon return to HMLA-267, Cpl Burgett deployed on the 31st MEU with HMM-265 (REIN) from December 2007 to June 2008. Sergeant Burgett then deployed again on the 31st MEU with HMM-262 (REIN) from January 2009 to July 2009. During his time at HMLA-267, Sergeant Burgett served as an AH-1W/UH-1N Plane Captain, Collateral Duty Inspector, Weapons and Tactics Instructor, and Enlisted Aircrew Training Manager. 

After returning from the 31st MEU, Sergeant Burgett received orders to HMLA-369 for transition to the UH-1Y. He deployed with the Gunfighters to Afghanistan in support of OEF from April 2010 to November 2010. During this time, Sergeant Burgett served as an AH-1W/UH-1Y Plane Captain, Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative, Flightline NCOIC, and Weapons and Tactics Instructor. 

Upon return, Sergeant Burgett was selected for duty as a Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) instructor at MCAS Yuma. He reported in May 2011 and instructed students during six WTI classes. During this time, Sergeant Burgett served as a UH-1N/Y instructor, Crew-Served Weapons and Offensive Air Support (OAS) SME, and UH-1 Division Chief. He was also the last UH-1N crew chief instructor for MAWTS-1. 

Staff Sergeant Burgett was then selected for Recruiting Duty and attended Basic Recruiter Course 5-14 at MCRD San Diego in July 2014. Selected as the Honor Graduate, Staff Sergeant Burgett then received orders to Recruiting Station Orange, RSS Pearl City, PCS Kona on the island of Hawaii. He served as a Production Recruiter and Assistant SNCOIC from September 2014 to September 2017. 

In October of 2017, Gunnery Sergeant Burgett reported to HMLA-775(-) at MCAS Camp Pendleton. He participated in numerous multi-national and joint exercises, as well as various Reserve Component training evolutions. While at the Coyotes, Gunnery Sergeant Burgett served as the Flightline Division Chief and Enlisted Aircrew Coordinator. 

In October of 2020, Gunnery Sergeant Burgett reported to HMLA-369 at MCAS Camp Pendleton to serve as the squadron's Enlisted Aircrew Coordinator. 

In July of 2021, First Sergeant Burgett reported to 3d Transportation Battalion aboard MCB Butler in Okinawa, where he served as the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant. 

In July of 2023, First Sergeant Burgett reported to 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, for duty as the Weapons Company First Sergeant. 

In February of 2024 Sergeant Major Burgett reported to 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division for duty as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader. 

Sergeant Major Burgett has a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics, Summa Cum Laude, from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. His personal decorations include Air Medal with numeral "7", Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with (2) gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, and Combat Aircrew Wings with (3) combat stars.
