Major Gavin K. Reed

Major Reed was born in Oceanside, California on 14 September 1985.   Upon graduation from North Stafford High School, he attended Virginia Tech, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in History.  In May 2007, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and reported to Quantico, VA for enrollment in The Basic School (TBS).

 

Upon graduation from TBS in May 2008, he reported to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for instruction in the United States Army Field Artillery Basic Officers Course.  Graduating in October 2008, Second Lieutenant Reed then reported for duty to 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton, California.  From October 2008 to May 2009, he served as Platoon Commander and Fire Direction Officer for Battery T.  In June 2009, Second Lieutenant Reed was assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7 as an individual augment.  From October 2009 to October 2010, Regimental Combat Team 7 deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  During the deployment, Second Lieutenant Reed served as the Assessments Officer and Fires Watch Officer and was promoted to First Lieutenant.  After returning from the deployment, from December 2010 to May 2011, First Lieutenant Reed was assigned as the Battery Executive Officer for Battery T.   

 

In June 2011, First Lieutenant Reed executed orders to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and reported to Company L, 3d Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment.  From June 2011 to May 2012, he served as Lead Series Commander for three recruit training cycles and was promoted to the rank of Captain.  In June 2012, Captain Reed was reassigned to Receiving Company, Support Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment and served as the Company Executive Officer.  From June 2013 to June 2014, he assumed command of Receiving Company.  Upon relinquishing company command in June 2014, Captain Reed executed orders to 1st Battalion, 12th Marines.

 

In July 2014, Captain Reed checked into 1st Battalion, 12th Marines and prepared to deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as an individual augment.  From August 2014 to February 2015, he was assigned to Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan as a G-3 Current Operations and Future Operations Action Officer.  Upon return from deployment back to 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, Captain Reed was assigned as the Assistant Operations Officer where he served in the billet until September 2015.  In September 2015, Captain Reed assumed command of Battery B.  As the Battery B Commander, he executed a six month Unit Deployment Program rotation to Okinawa, Japan from December 2015 to June 2016.  In July 2016, Captain Reed relinquished command of Battery B and was assigned as the Battalion Fire Support Officer 1st Battalion, 3d Marines and served in lieu of the Regimental Fire Support Officer for 3d Marine Regiment during Integrated Training Exercise 3-17.  In July 2017, he executed orders to Training Command in Quantico, Virginia.

 

In August 2017, upon checking into Training Command, Captain Reed was promoted to the rank of Major and assigned as the Ground Combat Element, Current Operations Action Officer in the G-3.  He served in this billet until May 2019 and then was assigned as the Future Operations Officer, G-3. 

 

In July of 2021, Major Reed reported to 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment and assumed duties as the Battalion Logistics Officer.  He served in this billet until June of 2022, in which he assumed his current billet as the Battalion Executive Officer.

 

Major Reed is a 2021 graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, earning a Masters of Military Studies.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star in lieu of second award), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

 

He has been married to his wife Victoria for 14 years, they have a son named Harrison and are expecting a second child in December 2022.
