Lieutenant Colonel John A. McNulty

Lieutenant Colonel McNulty was raised in Louisiana. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1999.  He attended Virginia Tech and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance in 2003. In December 2004, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant via the Officer Candidate Course Program.

Upon completion of The Basic School, Lieutenant McNulty attended the Field Artillery Basic Officer Course at Fort Sill, OK. Lieutenant McNulty’s first assignment was with 5th Battalion, 10th Marines, serving as Platoon Commander and Fire Direction Officer in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Executive Officer, and Battalion Liaison Officer in Operation Iraqi Freedom on a second deployment. In 2008, Lieutenant McNulty transferred to RS Richmond where he served until 2011 as Officer Selection Officer, Roanoke, VA. In 2011, he also graduated from Averett University with a Master’s in Business Administration.   

After graduating with distinction from the U.S. Army’s Field Artillery Captains Career Course in 2011, Captain McNulty transferred to 1st Battalion, 12th Marines at MCB Kaneohe Bay, HI where he served as a Headquarters Battery Commander, Charlie Battery Commander in support of UDP, and Assistant Fire Support Coordinator for 3d Marine Regiment.

Captain McNulty then transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy in 2014, where he served as a Master Instructor of Economics, Admissions Board Member, and Marine Mentor for Midshipmen. Completing his tour at the Naval Academy, Major McNulty transferred to the Air Force’s Command and Staff College where he graduated with distinction in 2018, additionally earning a Master’s degree in Military Occupational Art and Science.

In 2018, Major McNulty transferred to 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines at Camp Hansen, Okinawa where he served as the Battalion Logistics Officer and Executive Officer. In 2020, he transferred to 12th Marine Regiment where he served as Executive Officer.

Lieutenant Colonel McNulty is currently the Commanding Officer of 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, taking command on 4 June 2021.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device and two gold stars, Combat Action Ribbon, and Recruiting Ribbon.
