Born in Chicago, IL, Lieutenant Colonel Tomich graduated from St. Xavier University and was commissioned in September 1993.
After completing the Infantry Officers Course, he served as Rifle Platoon Commander, Weapons Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines. Following an overseas deployment with the battalion he reported to Headquarters, 7th Marine Regiment and served as the Regimental Reconnaissance Platoon Commander. Upon his promotion to Captain he was assigned to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion as the Assistant Operations Officer.
Transferring to Marine Corps Security Force Company Bangor, Washington in July 1998 he served as Platoon Commander and Guard Company Commander. Completing his tour in Bangor, he attended the Armor Officers Advanced Course in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Beginning in October 2001, Lieutenant Colonel Tomich served as Commanding Officer, Company A in 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA. During his tour the company deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/1 and the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), completed a WESTPAC deployment, and engaged in combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom 1.
Returning to CONUS in July 2003, he was assigned to 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as the Inspector Instructor for Company C, Riverton, Utah. In June 2007, after graduating from the Naval Command and Staff College in Newport, Rhode Island, he was assigned to Headquarters, Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) in Stuttgart, Germany. Serving as Eastern European Regional Engagement Branch Chief he deployed as CDRUSEUCOM’s Emergency Action Team Leader during the Russian invasion of Georgia and Operation Assured Delivery. He also deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the ISAF SOF Deputy Operations Officer.
Upon his return to 7th Marines in the spring of 2010, he redeployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While deployed he served as the Director of the Regional Command Southwest/I MEF (FWD) Special Operations Command and Control Element.
His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with “V”, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal with OLC, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, Army Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.
