Born in Hartford, CT, Lieutenant Colonel Hankard graduated from Trinity College and was commissioned in April 1996.
After completing the Infantry Officers Course, he served as Rifle Platoon Commander, Company E and Combined Anti-Armor Team Platoon Commander, Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines. Following an overseas deployment with the battalion to Okinawa, he reported to Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry (East) where he served as a Company Executive Officer, Company Commander, and Instructor Group OIC.
Completing his tour at Infantry Training Battalion, he attended the Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduating in May 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Hankard served as Company Commander, Headquarters Company, 2nd Marine Regiment and Company Commander, Company L, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines. While in Command of Company L, Lieutenant Colonel Hankard deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and to Al Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Concluding his operational tour with time spent as the Battalion Executive Officer for 3/2 and Assistant Training Officer, G-3, 2nd Marine Division in June 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Hankard was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines where he served as the Inspector-Instructor for Weapons Company, Austin, Texas. In June 2010, after graduating from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marines in Camp Lejeune, NC. Serving as the Battalion Executive Officer, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Nawa District, Afghanistan.
Upon return from this deployment in the winter of 2011, he was transferred to II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) for work-ups and deployed in January 2013 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While deployed he served as the Current Operations Officer, C-3 for Regional Command (Southwest).
His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with “V”, and Combat Action Ribbon.
