U.S. Marines assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2 conduct a security patrol in Sangin valley, Helmand province, Afghanistan, Jan. 3, 2011. The Marines conducted counterinsurgency operations in support of the International Security Assistance Force in order to decrease insurgent activity and gain the support of the Afghan residents.
