Sergeant Edward Mercado and Sgt. Michael L. Kufchak, drill instructors serving with 1st Recruit Training Battalion, stand together for a photo in 1991. Kufchak currently serves as the 1st Marine Division sergeant major. He said he enjoyed transforming untrained civilians into U.S. Marines.
