FATALITY NEAR MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON

Sergeant John D. Wise III, 27, of Riverside, California assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division was gravely injured in an accident February 2 near the Cristianitos Gate of Camp Pendleton. Sergeant Wise died as a result of a single-vehicle crash. He was pronounced deceased at the site of the crash. Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident at this time.

Sergeant Wise’s awards include the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Ribbon with one gold star, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Marine Corps Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Ribbon with one bronze star, the National Defense Service Medal Ribbon, the Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon, the Global War Terrorism Service Ribbon, the Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with three bronze stars, and the NATO International Security Assistance Force Ribbon.

We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of a member of the Marine Corps family, and we will do all we can to comfort the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
