Biography
Commanding Officer, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment
Lieutenant Colonel W. MacCutcheon

Lieutenant Colonel MacCutcheon is a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  In May of 1999, after receiving a NROTC scholarship, he was commissioned from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Upon graduation from The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course, Lieutenant MacCutcheon reported to 2d Battalion, 8th Marines in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  He was assigned as a Rifle Platoon Commander while deployed with the 24th MEU (SOC), during which time he conducted Operation RAPID CHEETAH in Kosovo.

Following his return from the 24th MEU, he served as the Assistant Operations Officer and later the Combined Anti-Armor Team (CAAT) Platoon Commander.  During his time with CAAT, he deployed for Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from January to June 2003.  After promotion to Captain, he was assigned to The Basic School, where he was a Warfighting Instructor, Infantry Platoon Commander, and Instructor at Infantry Officer Course.

Upon completion of Expeditionary Warfare School in April 2007, Captain MacCutcheon reported to Twentynine Palms, California, to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion, where he served as a Company Commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Western Anbar Province.  Subsequently, Captain MacCutcheon cross-decked to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines for service as Company Commander, Company L, deploying to Hit, Iraq in 2008-2009.

Once home from Iraq, now Major MacCutcheon reported for duty at Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group (MCTOG), where he acted as a Battalion Team Leader.  In this role, he deployed for several months to The Republic of Georgia to train and mentor the 31st Georgian Light Infantry Battalion for their deployment to Afghanistan.  He then attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia, where he was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate in June 2011.

Major MacCutcheon was selected to command Recruiting Station Atlanta, Georgia, from 2011-2014.  Thereafter, he has been serving at Camp Pendleton, as Assistant Operations Officer for 5th Marine Regiment, then Executive Officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Marines where he deployed to Okinawa, Japan, as part of the BLT for the 31st MEU until January 2016.

Lieutenant Colonel MacCutcheon’s personal decorations include: Two Bronze Star Medals with combat distinguishing device, “V”, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
