Sergeant Major, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion
Sergeant Major R. B. Johnson

Sergeant Major Johnson is a native of Washington D.C., He enlisted in the U.S. Marines April 1999 upon graduating recruit training at
Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC he reported to Infantry Training Battalion Camp Geiger, NC. He then went to Weapons Training
Battalion where he was assigned the primary Military Occupation Skill (MOS) 0341 in Oct 1999.

In October of 1999, Private First Class Johnson reported to 3rd Bn 3rd Mar India Co Wpns Plt Kaneohe Bay, HI. He served as a
Mortar Man and Section Leader. During this tour he participated in two UDPs and deployed with the 31st MEU in support of OIF.
During this tour he attended Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques (HRST) Masters Course.

In January 2004, Cpl Johnson executed orders to Marine Corps Security Forces where he received the MOS 8153 Cadre Trainer and
later reported to 7th Fleet Yokosuka, Japan. While in Yokosuka, Japan he served as primary instructor of anti-terrorism level II and
Auxiliary Security Force chief instructor. During his tour he attended Small Arms Marksmanship Instructors (SAMI) Course and
Non-Lethal Instructors Course.

Sergeant Johnson departed Yokosuka, Japan in December 2005 where he reported to 1st Bn 8th Mar 81’s Plt as 1st Section leader and
later was the Platoon Sergeant during the 24th MEU Commander's Personal Security Detail during OIF . While on the MEU Sergeant
Johnson was part of the Non-Combative Evacuation Operation in Beirut Lebanon in 2006 which resulted in a humanitarian relief and
evacuation of Americans.

In May 2007 Sergeant Johnson reported to Recruiting School San Diego, CA. Upon graduating from Recruiting School, he obtained the
8411 MOS and assigned to 4th District Recruiting Station Frederick, MD. He served as canvassing recruiter and assistant
Noncommissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC). During this tour he attended Infantry Unit Leaders Course (IULC) and Foreign
Weapons Instructors Course (FWIC).

In June of 2010 Staff Sergeant Johnson was reassigned to, 2nd Bn 3rd Mar Kaneohe Bay, HI as an Embedded Training Team during
OEF deployment in Nawa, Afghanistan. Later Staff Sergeant Johnson was assigned to G Co for UDP Japan. He served as Weapons
Platoon Sergeant and Company Gunnery Sergeant. During this time he attended Foreign Military Advisors Course, Army Mortar
Leaders Course and Staff Noncommissioned Career Course.

In February 2013, Staff Sergeant Johnson reported to Marine Forces Pacific Camp Smith, HI and served as headquarters and service
Battalion First Sergeant and then assigned to G3 Current Operations as Watch Chief. He also served as Mobile Training Team Chief
Advisor for Maldivian Marine Corps. During this tour he attended Ground Operations Specialist Course where he received 8711 MOS.

In May 2015 Gunnery Sergeant Johnson reported to 1st Bn, 7th Mar and was assigned as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Security
Cooperations Team Jordan and later assigned as Company Gunnery Sergeant for Suicide Charley. During this tour he has participated
in Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF) and was attached to Task Force SW and in direct support of the US
Army 501st Paratroopers for Operation Resolute Support (ORS) in Kandahar, Afghanistan and Syria. During this tour he attended
Advanced Course.

In March 2018 First Sergeant Johnson was assigned as Inspector Instructor Site First Sergeant for MWSS 473 DET A, MAG 41 located
at Naval Air Station Lemoore, CA. During this tour he has attended First Sergeants Course, the E-8 Regional Seminar, Marine Corps
Senior Enlisted PME and OSCAR GEN III Master Trainer course.

In May 2021First Sergeant Johnson reported to 5th 11th Mar Camp Pendleton, CA where he served as Battery T First Sergeant and
deployed in support of UDP 22.1 with 12th Marines Regiment Okinawa, Japan.

As of May 2022 SgtMaj Johnson is served as Battalion Sergeant Major for Combat Logistics Battalion 11, Camp Pendleton, CA where
he deployed in support of Koa Moana 23.


In Jan 2024 SgtMaj Johnson was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion as the Battalion Sergeant Major, Camp Pendleton, CA.


Sergeant Major Johnson's personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one
gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star, Humanitarian Medal, Combat Action ribbon and Combat
Infantry Badge.
