Commanding Officer, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Y. Kim

Lieutenant Colonel Kim commissioned in the United States Marine Corps in December 2005 as a Combat Engineer Officer. He served as a platoon commander, company executive officer, and company commander in Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 and 373, 3d Marine Air Wing from 2007 to 2009.

He was selected to attend resident career level school at the US Army Engineer Captains Career Course in 2009.

Lieutenant Colonel Kim served as an assistant operations officer and company commander with 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division from 2010-2013. He then executed orders to HQ, I Marine Expeditionary Force as the MEF Engineer in the G-4 and subsequently the Aide de Camp to the Commanding General, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade from 2013 to 2014.

Lieutenant Colonel Kim executed orders to Marine Corps Recruit Depot to serve as a series commander and operations officer.

He was selected to attend resident intermediate level school at the US Army Command and General Staff College in 2016.

Lieutenant Colonel Kim assumed duties as the battalion executive officer at 8th Engineer Support Battalion from 2017-2019. He then reported to HQ, 2nd Marine Logistics Group to serve as the Future Operations Officer.

Lieutenant Colonel Kim most recently served as a program coordinator with the MAGTF Integration Branch, Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources, Headquarters Marine Corps.

Lieutenant Colonel Kim deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007 and 2009, Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010 and 2012, and Operation Resolute Support in 2018. He also served as an individual augment to HQ, US Central Command in 2015 and as the senior engineer advisor to the Afghan National Army General Staff Engineer in 2018.

Lieutenant Colonel Kim is from Centerville, VA and graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 2004 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business. He is also a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI National Security Fellowship in 2022. He is married to Grace Kim from Silver Spring, MD and they have two daughters, Charley and Emma.
