LtCol Tumanjan was born in Boise, Idaho and graduated from Bishop Kelly High School in 1999. Immediately following high school he reported to the United States Naval Academy and graduated four years later in May 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering and a commissioning as a Marine Corps officer. Following training at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia and the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he reported to his first fleet unit, 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, in June of 2004.
During his first tour of duty with 3d Battalion, 11th Marines he served as a Forward Observer, Battery Fire Direction Officer, and Battery Executive Officer and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from Jul 2004 to Mar 2005 and Sep 2006 to Apr 2007. He additionally deployed as part of the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan.
Following his time with 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, LtCol Tumanjan transferred to 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) where he qualified as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller and completed the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course for Air Officers. During this tour he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from Jan to Dec 2008 as the I MEF Personal Security Detachment OIC and again as a Supporting Arms Liaison Team (SALT) OIC with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit during a WESTPAC deployment.
LtCol Tumanjan’s next operational assignment was back with 3d Battalion, 11th Marines to serve as a battery commander for Headquarters Battery, Battery K, and Battery M over a three year tour from Jun 2011 to May 2014. During this time LtCol Tumanjan deployed with Battery M in support of Marine Air Group 50’s deployment to the CENTCOM AOR to serve as a provisional security element.
LtCol Tumanjan’s most recent operational assignment was again within the 11th Marine Regiment. From Jul 2018 to Jun 2019 he served with 2d Battalion, 11th Marines as the Operations Officer and Executive Officer. Following this, he served as the 11th Marines Executive Officer from Jun 2019 to May 2020. In May 2020 he assumed command of 2d Battalion, 11th Marines.
LtCol Tumanjan served in the supporting establishment as a Recruiting Station Commanding Officer, spending three years in Fort Lauderdale, FL from 2014 to 2017.
His formal military education includes resident PME at the Expeditionary Warfare School and the Marine Corps Command & Staff College in Quantico, VA where he received a Master’s in Military Studies. LtCol Tumanjan is married with two daughters.
