Major Blaine N. Barby was raised in Beaver, Oklahoma. He received a scholarship through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and attended the University of Oklahoma from June 2001 to May 2006 where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering.
Following his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in May 2006, Major Barby attended The Basic School and the Infantry Officer’s Course in Quantico Virginia. In July 2007, he reported for duty at 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Major Barby was assigned a maneuver platoon within Headquarters and Service Company and deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in September 2007. Upon redeployment in April 2008, Major Barby was assigned as a platoon commander in Company C. He then attended, and was the Honor Graduate, at Light Armored Vehicle Leader’s Course in October 2008. Major Barby deployed again in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from March 2009 to October 2009 and then served as the Executive Officer, Company C, preparing the company for their next deployment.
In July 2010, Major Barby was selected to be the Aide-de-Camp to Commanding General, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center and Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command. After a year as Aide-de-Camp, Major Barby was transferred to the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He served as a section leader in the Southern Command, Coordination, Liaison, and Assessment Team from August 2011 to September 2013 where he conducted multiple Security Cooperation missions in Latin and South America.
Major Barby was then selected to attend the United States Army’s Maneuver Captain’s Career Course (MCCC) in Fort Benning, Georgia and, while stationed there, attend Basic Airborne School. He graduated from MCCC in April 2014 and was transferred to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as the Commanding Officer, Company B from June 2014 to April 2016. During that time, he deployed aboard the USS AMERICA with the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-South 14 in command of the ground combat element. Following company command, Major Barby was temporarily assigned to 1st Marine Expeditionary Force to be a part of Task Force Al Asad 17.1. The Task Force deployed to Iraq from December 2016 to August 2017 where Major Barby served as the Assistant Operations Officer and Maneuver Advisor to the Iraqi Army in their fight against the Islamic State.
Follow the deployment, Major Barby was assigned as the Inspector-Instructor to the Anti-Tank Training Company, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, were he oversaw the manning, training, and equipping of the eight Anti-Tank Sections within 4th Marine Division from September 2017 to June 2020. During this time, Major Barby graduated from the Marine Corps’ Command and Staff College distance education program. Major Barby was then transferred to 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, CA where he was assigned as the Future Operations Officer, 1st Marine Regiment. In July of 2021 he reassigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, where he is currently serving as the Executive Officer.
Major Barby is married to Megan Alyse Barby and has three children.
