Sergeant Major Turner enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina in August of 1998. Upon completion, he received training at Marine Combat Training and was transferred to Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools at Camp Johnson, North Carolina, where he received training as a Supply Warehouseman.
After graduation, he reported to Combat Service Support Group 3 (CSSG-3), 3rd Force Service Support Group, MCB, HI. He served as the Warehouse and Shipping clerk until being transferred to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, to serve as the Warehouse Chief. In March of 2001 Sergeant Major Turner completed the Green Belt Martial Arts Instructor’s Course at Regimental Schools, 3rd Marine Regiment to serve as an Instructor within Headquarters Battalion.
In March of 2002 Sergeant Major Turner reported to Marine Wing Support Group 27 (MWSG-27), MCAS Cherry Point, NC to serve as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge for the Group’s S-4 section and Group Color Sergeant. Sergeant Major Turner was selected as the Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter and promoted to the rank of Sergeant in August of 2002. In March of 2003 Sergeant Major Turner completed the Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor Trainer course in Quantico, VA, and served as the Martial Arts Instructor Trainer for the unit.
In July of 2004 Sergeant Major Turner reported to Drill Instructor School class 4-04 and served as a Drill Instructor with Mike Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD Parris Island, SC. He served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Inspector Instructor for the 6th Marine Corps District. During his tour, he was selected as Drill Instructor and Battalion Senior Drill Instructor of the Quarter. In January of 2007 was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In September of 2007 Sergeant Major Turner reported to 1st Supply Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA in November of 2007 where he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Supply Company. Sergeant Major Turner deployed in August of 2008 to Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and served two months as the Company First Sergeant. Upon returning from Iraq Sergeant Major Turner was assigned to the Deployed Support Unit where he served as the SNCOIC. In March of 2010 he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
In April of 2010 Sergeant Major Turner reported to Marine Security Guard School class 4-10 as a student Detachment Commander. Upon graduation Sergeant Major Turner was assigned to Conakry, The Republic of Guinea, and Islamabad, Pakistan where he served his duties as a Marine Security Guard Detachment Commander. In April of 2013 he was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant.
In May of 2013 Sergeant Major Turner reported to Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division, and served as Company First Sergeant for Truck Company, Communications Company and Acting Battalion Sergeant Major.
In June 2016, Sergeant Major Turner reported to 1st Marine Raider Battalion, MARSOC and served as Company First Sergeant, Marine Special Operations Company Bravo. He deployed in July 2017 to Camp Navarro, Philippines, and served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Special Operations Task Force 511.2 in support of counter terrorism operations, during Operation Pacific Eagle - Philippines (OPE-P).
Sergeant Major Turner’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 1 gold star in lieu of second award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award.
