Sgt. Marc A. Czyrba, the Sergeant of the Guard for Headquarters Company, Regimental Combat Team 1, awaits the call to march the ceremonial cake detail during the regiment's 233 Marine Corps Birthday celebration at Camp Ramadi, Iraq, Nov. 10. Servicemembers aboard the camp gathered to hear Gen. John A Lejeune's birthday message and watch a video birthday message by Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James T. Conway and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Carlton W. Kent. The commanding officer of RCT-1, Col. Lewis A. Craparotta, took a moment to address everyone in attendance. "As indicated in the traditional birthday message, every year on our about 10 November, Marines pause to reflect on the birthday of our Corps. It doesn’t matter where we are we take the time to recognize the birthday. Although we tend to throw lavish celebrations when we aren’t deployed some of our most memorable celebrations are those that took place in far away lands. Those celebrations in fighting holes in Beirut, Somalia, or Saudi Arabia, those toasts with fellow Marines deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq. Every place where Marines are deployed today they’ll pause to celebrate the birthday of the Corps.”
