Gunnery Sgt. Maria Rodriguez, a native of Hawthorne, Calif., is the lead uniformed victim advocate for 1st Marine Division. As a UVA, Rodriguez provides confidential support and services to the victims of sexual assault. Sexual assault is defined as intentional sexual contact, characterized by use of force, physical threat, abuse of authority, or when the victim does not or cannot consent. Sexual assault can occur without regard to gender, spousal relationship or age of the victim.
