Petty Officer 2nd Class Derek Earhart, a native of Fremont, Ohio, who serves as loadmaster with Assault Craft Unit 5, addresses the safety procedures of "griping," a process to tie down light armored vehicles to a landing craft air cushion, with the Marines of 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion prior to a training exercise here April 29, 2013. The griping exercise was designed to teach the Marines the basics of beach landings with their LAVs carried by a landing craft air cushion, making 1st LAR a more mobile force. Landing craft air cushions are capable of carrying up to 65 tons over 70 miles between land and sea. (U.S. Marine Corps photo Cpl. Robert J. Reeves/Released)
