A Marine with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, walks side-by-side with an Iraqi Policeman on a partnered patrol near Ramadi, Iraq, Nov. 6. Sgt. Samuel R. Lott, a 23-year-old motor transportation operator from Mojave Valley, Ariz., with Headquarters and Support Company, Regimental Combat Team 1, receives his promotion warrant Oct. 1 at Camp Ramadi, Iraq. Lott was first deployed to Fallujah for a year in February of 2004 with RCT-1, then again with the unit to the same area of operations in January of 2008. As one of the few Marines in his platoon to deploy to al Anbar Province before, Lott quickly was looked to as a leader by both Marines his junior and his senior. Chief Warrant Officer Shane M. Duhe, a civil affairs team leader, Detachment 3, Team 5, Regimental Combat Team 1, hands out a soccer ball to a young Iraqi child during a civil affairs operation in Fallujah, Iraq, Sept. 5. The soccer ball contains the name of PFC Nick A. Madaras, an Army soldier who was killed while conducting combat operations in Iraq.
