KARMAH, Iraq (October 5, 2008)-Mayor Faisal Hamad Khalaf cuts the ribbon at the reopening of al Shohabi Boys and Girls primary school, October 5, in Karmah. Hundreds, from sixth to 12th grade, will attend the school this fall. Marines from Task Force 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, oversaw the reconstruction of the school. In an area with a roughly 20 percent literacy rate, Coalition forces view the struggling education system as a critical component in successfully rebuilding Iraq. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Marines and sailors of 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 5 arrive in Camp Korean Village, Iraq, Sept. 26, to take over mechanized operations from 2nd LAR Bn., RCT-5. Sgt. Samuel R. Lott, a 23-year-old motor transportation operator from Mojave Valley, Ariz., with Headquarters and Support Company, Regimental Combat Team 1, receives his promotion warrant Oct. 1 at Camp Ramadi, Iraq. Lott was first deployed to Fallujah for a year in February of 2004 with RCT-1, then again with the unit to the same area of operations in January of 2008. As one of the few Marines in his platoon to deploy to al Anbar Province before, Lott quickly was looked to as a leader by both Marines his junior and his senior.
