First Sergeant Jesse P. Mizzell

First Sergeant Mizzell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August, 1997 and graduated from 2d Recruit Training Battalion, Parris Island, South Carolina on 13 November 1997. Upon his graduation from Marine Combat Training, Camp Geiger, North Carolina, he was then assigned to Naval Air Technical Training Center, Pensacola, Florida and attended his first Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) school. In March, 1998 First Sergeant Mizzell graduated from the Naval Air Technical Training Center and was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station New River, Jacksonville, North Carolina and attended a second MOS school where he obtained the Military Occupational Specialty of 6153, CH-53D/E Helicopter Structural and Hydraulic Mechanic.

In July, 1998 First Sergeant Mizzell was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and received orders to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 at Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where he served as a CH-53D Airframes Mechanic. In January, 1999 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and obtained the qualification of Collateral Duty Inspector. In April, 2000 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and received the qualification of Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative. In May, 2000 First Sergeant Mizzell participated in a detachment to Mombasa, Kenya supporting Exercise Natural Fire.  Following the exercise in Kenya, he was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 aboard the Naval vessel USS Boxer for a Rim of the Pacific deployment, 2000. In the summer of 2001, he participated in Operation Koa Thunder at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.

In November, 2001 First Sergeant Mizzell executed orders to Marine Corps Air Station New River, Jacksonville, North Carolina and was assigned to the Center of Naval Aviation Technical Training Marine Unit and served as a Marine Occupational Specialty School Instructor. In May, 2003 he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and later obtained the certifications of Instructor Evaluator and Master Training Specialist. In January, 2005 First Sergeant Mizzell was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 as the Airframes Division Chief.

In September, 2005 First Sergeant Mizzell received orders to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, California for duty as the Airframes Work Center Supervisor. In November, 2007 he deployed with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166 assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit as the Airframes Work Center Supervisor, Detachment Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge, and later as the Maintenance Control Supervisor in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Sea Angel, assisting Bangladesh tsunami victims.

In February, 2009 First Sergeant Mizzell deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan as the Airframes Staff Non- Commissioned Officer In Charge with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Detachment A in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In July, 2009 he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and served as the Quality Assurance Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge.

In March, 2010 First Sergeant Mizzell executed orders to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia and was assigned to the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Academy Career Course as a Faculty Advisor. He was recognized as Faculty Advisor of the Year for 2010/2011 and subsequently won the Elihu Rose Award for Teaching Excellence. He later obtained the qualification of Master Faculty Advisor and held the position of Career Course Staff Non- Commissioned Officer In Charge.

In April, 2013 First Sergeant Mizzell transferred to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466 as the Maintenance Control Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge. In January, 2014 First Sergeant Mizzell was promoted to his current rank and reassigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, Camp Pendleton, California.  In October, 2014, he deploy in support of Unit Deployment Program (UDP) 15-1 to Okinawa, Japan.  Upon his return from the UDP in April, 2015, First Sergeant Mizzell assumed the position of Senior Enlisted Advisor for 1st Battalion, 1st Marines in the absence of a Battalion Sergeant Major.

First Sergeant Mizzell’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award.
