Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines
LtCol B. D. Coleman

Lieutenant Colonel Brian D. Coleman was born in Fallbrook, California and graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in May 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After receiving his commission in December 2009 via the Officer Candidate Course, 2nd Lieutenant Coleman attended the Basic School and the Infantry Officers’ Course. Upon graduation, he reported to 3d Battalion, 6th Marines (3/6) at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, NC in September 2010.

As a Rifle Platoon Commander in Kilo Company, 2nd Lieutenant Coleman deployed to Marjah, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from April 2011 until January 2012. Shortly after returning to the continental United States (CONUS), he was reassigned to Weapons Company where he took command of Combined Anti-Armor Team Two and deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of the Unit Deployment Program from March to October 2013. Upon 3/6’s return CONUS, 1st Lieutenant Coleman reported to Bravo Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) Company, Marine Corps Security Force Regiment (MCSFR), in Yorktown, VA.

After joining Bravo FAST in December 2013, Captain Coleman immediately deployed to Yokosuka, Japan and served as the Executive Officer, Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company Pacific (FASTPAC), MCSFR. In October 2014, Captain Coleman assumed command of FASTPAC until January 2015 when he redeployed CONUS. Once back CONUS, Captain Coleman assumed command of Bravo Company’s 6th Platoon, and from July to November 2015 deployed to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay. Upon returning CONUS, he was reassigned to the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Captain’s Career Course (MCCC) in Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon Graduating MCCC, Captain Coleman was reassigned to 3d Battalion, 4th Marines (3/4) at Marine Corps Base 29 Palms, California. In April 2017, Captain Coleman deployed in support Marine Rotational Force Darwin as the Battalion’s Assistant Operations Officer. Upon redeployment in October 2017, he assumed command of Lima Company 3/4 and in October 2018 deployed in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and Resolute Support to Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Upon returning stateside, Captain Coleman was selected for the Congressional Fellowship Program and was reassigned to Washington, D.C. There, Major Coleman served as Senator Richard Blumenthal’s 2020 Defense Fellow. In May 2021, he received his master’s degree in public policy from George Mason University and was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps as the Staff Secretary and Congressional Liaison for the Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies and Operations. In January 2023 he was reassigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine (1/5) as the Operations Officer and deployed on the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2024. In Jan 2025, he was reassigned to 1st Marine Division Headquarters where he served as the Current Operations Officer until Jan 2026. He is single and without children and enjoys reading, surfing, working out, and preparing for the next war.
