Colonel Frerichs graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and was commissioned in 2003 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program.
Following commissioning and graduation from The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course, he was assigned to 2d Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) at Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer, and Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Support Company. During this tour, he completed a WESTPAC deployment with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and a deployment to Okinawa with the 31st MEU.
In 2008, Colonel Frerichs reported to The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, where he served as the Weapons Platoon Commander, Instructor Battalion, and as a Weapons and Tactics Instructor at the Infantry Officer Course.
In 2011, Colonel Frerichs reported to 2d Battalion, 5th Marines (2/5) at Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as the Commanding Officer of Company E and deployed to Afghanistan in 2012. From 2013 to 2014, Colonel Frerichs served as the Battalion Landing Team Operations Officer for 2/5 and deployed to Okinawa with the 31st MEU.
In June 2014, Colonel Frerichs departed 2/5 to attend the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, earning a Master of Military Studies upon graduation in 2015.
From 2015 to 2018, Colonel Frerichs served as the Commanding Officer of Recruiting Station San Francisco. He then attended the School of Advanced Warfighting from 2018 to 2019.
From 2019 to 2022, Colonel Frerichs served as a Plans Officer with U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa in Stuttgart, Germany.
From 2022 to 2023, Colonel Frerichs served as the District Operations Officer for the 1st Marine Corps District in Garden City, New York.
From 2024 to 2025, Colonel Frerichs served as the Commanding Officer of 3d Battalion, 1st Marines.
From 2025 to 2026, Colonel Frerichs served as the Future Operations Officer for I Marine Expeditionary Force.
