Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment
SgtMaj A. B. Rice

Sergeant Major Rice is originally from Mansfield, Texas and graduated from Timberview High School in May 2007.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported for recruit training at MCRD San Diego, California on 25 June 2007. Upon graduation, Sergeant Major Rice attended the School of Infantry (SOI) at Camp Pendleton, California where he became a 0331 Machine Gunner. After graduating SOI, he attended Basic Security Guard School in Chesapeake, Virginia and was assigned to 2D Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST), Marine Corps Security Forces Battalion.

Sergeant Major Rice was promoted to Lance Corporal in March of 2008. He was assigned to 5th Platoon, 2D FAST from 2008 to 2010 and deployed to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and throughout Asia in the billets of Team Leader and Designated Marksman. During this period, he attended the Advanced Machine Gunner Course and the Designated Marksman Course. He was promoted to Corporal in January 2009.

In 2010, Sergeant Major Rice was stationed at Camp Pendleton with 1st Battalion 5th Marines. He deployed to Sangin and Kajaki, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He served as a Machine Gunner and Designated Marksman with the Police Advisory Team.

From 2012 to 2014, Sergeant Major Rice was stationed at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. He served in Combat Instructor Company as a Combat Instructor and Machine Gun Section Leader. During this period, he attended Foreign Weapons Instructors Course and Martial Arts Instructors Course. He was promoted to Sergeant in May 2012.

From 2014 to 2017, Sergeant Major Rice returned to Marine Corps Security Forces. He was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in January 2015 and served as a Platoon Sergeant for 5th Platoon, Bravo FAST. He attended the Infantry Unit Leader Course and then deployed to Guantánamo Bay in May of 2015 and to Yokosuka, Japan in December of 2015. While deployed to Japan, he supported the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet throughout INDOPACOM.

From 2017 to 2019, Sergeant Major Rice was stationed at Camp H. M. Smith, Hawaii where he served as an Operations Chief for the G5, and then a Watch Chief with the G357. During this period, he attended the Ground Combat Element Operations Specialist Course. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in November 2018.

In May 2019, Sergeant Major Rice attended Marine Security Guard (MSG) School class 4-19. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG), Region 8, as the Detachment Commander of U.S. Embassy Prague, Czech Republic.

In December 2021, Sergeant Major Rice was assigned to Region 2 in Mumbai, India and served as the Detachment Commander at U.S. Consulate Mumbai, India. Sergeant Major Rice was promoted to First Sergeant in August 2022 and received orders to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.

In September 2022, Sergeant Major Rice reported to Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division where he served as the Company First Sergeant. He deployed to the Republic of Korea in February 2024 in support of exercise Freedom Shield.

In February 2025, Sergeant Major Rice reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron 372, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and served as the Company First Sergeant for Headquarters and Service Company. During this period, he attended the Senior Leader Legal Course, the Legal Officer Course, and the Air Force Senior NCO Academy.
 
In July 2026, Sergeant Major Rice was frocked and received orders to 1st Battalion, 1st Marines where he currently serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.

Sergeant Major Rice's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, and the Marine Security Guard Ribbon.
