Sergeant Major, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines
SgtMaj J.C. Young

Sergeant Major Young was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 8, 1983. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in March 2001 and attended recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina on November 5, 2001. Upon completion, he reported to Marine Combat Training (MCT), School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Upon completion, he reported Engineer Equipment Instruction Co., Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he received the Engineer Equipment Operator MOS.

In May 2002, Sergeant Major Young reported to Engineer Co., Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, 1st MAW, MCAS Iwakuni, Japan where he was stationed for 14 months. During this time he served as a Engineer Equipment Operator and Fire team leader. After Serving 14 months in Iwakuni, he received orders to Camp Pendleton, California.

In August 2003, Sergeant Major Young reported to Headquarters Co., I MEF Headquarters Group, Camp Pendleton, California for duty as an Engineer Equipment Operator, Squad Leader, and Platoon Sergeant. While in Camp Pendleton he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2.1 in 2004 and Operation Iraqi Freedom 4.1 in 2006. In October 2005 he was promoted to Sergeant. After serving three years in Camp Pendleton, he again received orders to Okinawa, Japan.

In September 2006, Sergeant Major Young reported to Engineer Support Co., 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd MLG, Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan for duty as the Platoon Sergeant. He was attached twice to Combat Logistics Battalion 4 with Engineer Co. for deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom 6.2 in 2007 and with Security Co. for Operation Iraqi Freedom 9.1 in 2009 in support of combat operations.

In January 2010, he received orders to Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, he reported for duty as a Engineer Equipment Instructor, Engineer Equipment Instruction Co. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in October 2010. After 3 years as a formal schools instructor, he received orders to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

In January 2013, Sergeant Major Young reported for duty as the Engineer Chief, 10th Marine Regiment. During his tour there he served as the Regimental Martial Arts Instructor Trainer, Equal Opportunity Representative, and Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society Coordinator.

Sergeant Major Young received orders to Marine Combat Instructor School in March 2015, and was assigned to Fox Co., Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry West, Camp Pendleton, California. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in August 2016. He served as Combat Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Commander, Co. Gunnery Sergeant, Co. Chief Instructor, Battalion Operations Chief, and Company First Sergeant Headquarters and Instructor Co.

Upon Completion of Combat Instructor Duty, Sergeant Major Young received orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron 272, 2nd MAW, MCAS New River in September 2018. While there, He served as the Engineer Equipment Chief and Senior Enlisted Advisor for Engineer Company and Headquarters Company. He was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant in December 2019.

In January 2020, Sergeant Major Young received orders to 1st Battalion 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division for duty as the Weapons Company First Sergeant. In February 2021, he deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS San Antonio. In August 2021, he participated in Operation Freedom's Sentinel at Hammid Karazi International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.

In January 2022, Sergeant Major Young received orders to Site Support Sacramento, Maintenance Services Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 23, where he served as the I&I First Sergeant. He was promoted to Sergeant Major and recieved orders to Camp Pendleton, California effective 1 July 2024.

On July 3, 2024, Sergeant Major Young took his post as Battalion Sergeant Major 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division where he currently serves.
