Commanding Officer, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion
LtCol K.P. McCarley

LtCol Kyle P. McCarley grew up in Thousand Oaks, California and is a 2009 graduate from the University of Idaho’s NROTC Program with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

After attending The Basic School and Marine Corps Engineer School, he reported to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion (CEB) in Camp Pendleton, California. Upon his arrival, he reported to 1st Marine Regiment as an Individual Augment, serving as the S-4 Engineer Officer and deploying with Regimental Combat Team (RCT) 1 to Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan in support of OEF 10.1. After his tour with RCT-1, he returned 1st CEB and served as 3rd Platoon Commander, Alpha Company. In January 2012, he attached to Battalion Landing Team 3/5 and deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary unit in support of WESTPAC 12.2. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in May 2013.

In August 2013, Captain McCarley reported to 9th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB) in Okinawa, Japan. He served as Bulk Fuel Company Commander, Alpha Company Commander, and Battalion Training Officer. While at 9th ESB, Captain McCarley deployed to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in support of Khaan Quest 15 and Palawan, Philippines in support of PHIBLEX 15. 

In April 2016, Captain McCarley reported The University of Arizona’s NROTC unit and served as the Marine Officer Instructor. During this tour, Captain McCarley was a summer augment to OCS serving as a Platoon Commander for India Company, completed Expeditionary Warfare School (distance education), and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management. He was promoted to Major in April 2019.

In June 2019, Major McCarley reported to Naval Postgraduate School, earning a Master of Science degree in Operations Research and completing Command and Staff College (distance education). In June 2021, Major McCarley reported to the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab where he served as an Operations Research Analyst in Experiment Division, providing analytical support for Infantry Battalion 2030 and Marine Littoral Regiment experimentation.

In July 2023, Major McCarley reported back to 1st CEB and served as the Operations Officer and deployed to the Republic of Korea in support of Freedom Shield 24.

In June 2024, Major McCarley reported to the I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) G-4 to serve as the Force Engineer and deployed to the Philippines in support of Balikatan 25. He was promoted to his current rank in October 2024.

LtCol McCarley's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd Award), and the 2025 Marine Corps Engineer Association Senior Engineer Officer of the year. LtCol McCarley is married to the former Allison Buswell from Salem, Oregon and they have four children: Clayton (10), Wyatt (8), Arlo (5), and Sedona (1).
