Commanding Officer, 3rd Battalion 1st Marines
Lieutenant Colonel J. T. Frerichs

Lieutenant Colonel Frerichs was born on 19 March 1981 in Springfield, Illinois. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania, he received his commission in 2003 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

Second Lieutenant Frerichs attended The Basic School and the Infantry Officer’s Course in Quantico. He was then assigned to duty with Second Battalion, First Marines in Camp Pendleton, California. While with 2/1, he served as Platoon Commander, First Platoon, Company G and the Company Executive Officer. He completed his time with 2/1 as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Support Company. During this assignment, Lieutenant Frerichs completed one WESTPAC deployment assigned to the 13th MEU with time in Australia, Egypt and Iraq, and one 31st MEU deployment to Okinawa, with time in Australia, South Korea, Cambodia, and the Philippines. 

In 2008, Captain Frerichs was assigned to duty as an instructor at the Basic School, Quantico, Virginia. During this tour, Captain Frerichs served as the Weapons Platoon Commander, Instructor Battalion, and as a Weapons and Tactics Instructor at the Infantry Officer Course. During this assignment, Captain Frerichs completed non-resident Expeditionary Warfare School. 

Captain Frerichs reported for duty with Second Battalion, Fifth Marines at Camp Pendleton in 2011. While assigned to 2/5, Captain Frerichs served as the Commanding Officer for Company E. As a company commander, Captain Frerichs deployed to Afghanistan in 2012. From 2013-14, Major Frerichs served as the Battalion Landing Team Operations Officer for 2/5 and deployed to Okinawa on the 31st MEU. During this deployment, Major Frerichs served as the GCE commander for the 31st MEU execution of Operation DAMAYAN in support of relief operations in the Philippines.

In June of 2014, Major Frerichs separated from 2/5 and reported for duty as a student at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He earned his Masters of Military Studies upon graduation.

In 2015, Major Frerichs assumed command of Recruiting Station San Francisco. He successfully completed his three year assignment in 2018.

In 2018, Major Frerichs was selected to attend the School of Advanced Warfighting as a student. He earned his Master of Operational Studies degree upon graduation.

From 2019-2022, Major Frerichs served as a Plans Officer for U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa in Stuttgart, Germany.

From 2022-2023, Lieutenant Colonel Frerichs served as the District Operations Officer for the 1st Marine Corps District in Garden City, NY.

Lieutenant Colonel Frerichs’ personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with combat distinguishing device, the Meritorious Service Medal with three Gold Stars, the Combat Action Ribbon with Gold Star, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device.
