Commanding Officer, 5th Marine Regiment
Colonel G. J. Flynn

Colonel George Flynn was born aboard Camp Pendleton, California on May 26th, 1979. Upon graduation from Virginia Tech in 2001, Colonel Flynn commissioned into the United States Marine Corps.

Colonel Flynn has executed multiple operational deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and deployed in support of exercises and crisis response requirements in the U.S. Central Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S Indo-Pacific Command areas of responsibility.

His service in the Operating Forces includes: Third Platoon Commander and Weapons Platoon Commander, Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines (2002-2004); Executive Officer, Golf Company, Battalion Landing Team 2/8, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (2004-2005); Commanding Officer, Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2010-2012); Operations Officer, Battalion Landing Team 2/4, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit; Assistant Chief of Staff G-5 Plans Officer, I Marine Expeditionary Force (2018-2020); Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, deploying as a Battalion Landing Team in support of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (2020-2021) and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (2022-2023); and Assistant Chief of Staff G-3 Operations Officer, 1st Marine Division (2024-2025).

His service outside the Operating Forces includes Basic Course Instructor and Staff Platoon Commander, The Basic School (2006-2007); Instructor and Deputy Director, Infantry Officer Course (2007-2009); Platoon Commander, Officer Candidate School (2010); and Director, Infantry Officer Course (2014-2016).

Colonel Flynn assumed command of the 5th Marine Regiment on July 3rd, 2025.  

Colonel Flynn is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Course, Expeditionary Warfare School (with distinction), the Marine Corps Command and Staff College (distinguished graduate), the School of Advanced Warfighting, and the U.S. Army War College.

Colonel Flynn’s personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star in lieu of second award.
