Commanding Officer, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel D. J. Davis

Lieutenant Colonel Davis is a native of South Bend, Indiana. He graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Business Administration and commissioned through the Platoon Leaders Course program in 2006. Following graduation from The Basic School, Infantry Officer Course, and Ground Intelligence Officer Course he reported to 3D Battalion, 3D Marines, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. During this tour he served as the Assistant Intelligence Officer, Platoon Commander, and Scout Sniper Platoon Commander, deploying in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 9.2 and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 10.2.

In 2011, he reported to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California. He served as Company Commander, Company A and Reconnaissance Platoon Commander, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. In 2012, he was reassigned to the Force Reconnaissance Company and served as a Platoon Commander, Company Operations Officer, and Maritime Raid Force Commander, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, deploying in support of WESTPAC 13.2. Upon redeployment, he assumed command of the Force Reconnaissance Company.

In 2015, he reported to the Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion, Fort Meade, Maryland. He served as a Company Commander, Deputy Branch Chief/Team Leader within a Combat Support Agency’s Operations Directorate, deploying in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE, and the Battalion Operations Officer.

In 2019, he reported to the I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. He served as the Special Training Branch Officer-in-Charge, Expeditionary Operations Training Group. Shortly after, he was reassigned as the Intelligence Officer, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit deploying in support of WESTPAC 20.1 and Operation OCTAVE QUARTZ, U.S. Africa Command’s repositioning of U.S. forces from Somalia.

Upon redeployment in 2021, he reported to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and served as the Battalion Executive Officer. In 2022, he transferred to the I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group and served as the Information Warfare Coordinator. He will assume command of 1st Reconnaissance Battalion in June of 2023.

Lieutenant Colonel Davis is a Distinguished Graduate of the resident and non-resident Marine Corps Command and Staff College, the Distinguished Honor Graduate Class 1-15 of the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Career Captain’s Course and holds a Master of Military Studies from Marine Corps University.
