Lance Corporal Michael W. M. Dean, a 26-year-old native of Oamaru, also stood guard at the foot of the memorial. Prominent government and military officials of the United States and New Zealand commemorated the 70th anniversary of the arrival of U.S. forces in Wellington during World War II.
