Retired Gen. Joseph Hoar, former commanding officer of 1st Marine Regiment, addresses the audience as the guest of honor during the regiment’s 100-year anniversary ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., Jan. 24, 2014. Gen. Hoar, a native of Boston, was in command of the regiment in 1979 through 1981. His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with combat “V” and gold star, and the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star.
