Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines
LtCol G. J. Flynn III

LtCol George Flynn was born aboard Camp Pendleton, California on May 26, 1979. A 2001 graduate of Virginia Tech, Lieutenant Flynn graduated The Basic School and the Infantry Officers Course in 2002 and checked into 2d Battalion, 8th Marines where he assumed the duties of rifle platoon commander, Golf Company, 3d Platoon.

In January of 2003 Lieutenant Flynn deployed with 2/8 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and conducted operations in An Nasiriyah, Iraq.

Upon his return in May of 2003 he assumed the billet of Weapons Platoon Commander, Golf Company. In November of 2003 Lieutenant Flynn deployed with 2/8 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and conducted operations in Kunar Province.

Upon the battalion's return from Operation Enduring Freedom in June 2004, Lieutenant Flynn assumed the billet of Company Executive Officer, Golf Company and in March 2005 deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/8 as part of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Lieutenant Flynn returned to The Basic School in December 2005 and served as an urban tactics instructor, staff platoon commander, and Instructor, Infantry Officer Course. While serving as an Infantry Officer Course Instructor, Captain Flynn served in various billets to include Class Advisor for IOC Class 2-08 and as the Deputy Director, Infantry Officer Course from June 2008 to June 2009.

Upon completion of his tour at the Infantry Officer Course, Captain Flynn reported to Expeditionary Warfare School and graduated with distinction in the spring of 2010. In June 2010, Captain Flynn reported for duty to Officer Candidate School where he assumed the billet of Platoon Commander, 3d Platoon, Charlie Company.

In August 2010, Captain Flynn reported for duty to 2d Battalion, 4th Marines and took command of Echo Company on November 8th, 2010. From September 2011 to March 2012, Captain Flynn deployed with 2d Battalion, 4th Marines in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and conducted operations in the Musa Qala District of Afghanistan.

Upon return from deployment, Captain Flynn assumed the billet of Operations Officer, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines. In 2013, Major Flynn deployed with Battalion Landing Team, 2/4 in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In 2014 Major Flynn returned to Quantico and served as the Director, Infantry Officer Course from 2014-2016. After his tour at Infantry Officer Course, Major Flynn attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College for the 2016-2017 academic year where he received a Master's Degree in Military Studies and was recognized as a distinguished graduate.

Major Flynn attended the School of Advanced Warfighting for the 2017-2018 academic year and received a Master's Degree in Operational Studies. Upon graduation, Major Flynn reported for duty to I Marine Expeditionary Force to serve as a regional planner in the G-5. While at I MEF, LtCol Flynn served as the lead plans officer for southeast Asia contingency OPLANS while holding the billet of Assistant Chief of Staff, I MEF G-5.

LtCol Flynn assumed command of 1st Battalion, 4th Marines on 25 October 2020.

LtCol Flynn's personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star in lieu of second award.
